FAQs

I've never done anything like this - is it really for me?

Everyone's a beginner at some point! We'd recommend coming down and giving it a go! Most of our classes are open to people of all levels and no experience is necessary.

What is the age/ weight/ height limit?

Anyone 16 years and over is welcome at our classes and there are no height limitations.

There are no weight restrictions to the equipment - however certain moves will require you to support your own weight.

Is it safe?

With proper equipment, training and supervision, aerial arts are as safe as any other recreational sport or rigorous physical activity you may engage in. (Needless to say, we have crash mats beneath all apparatus just in case!)

Will this really get me fit?

Yes. Absolutely. Performing strengthening exercises while inverted is one of the most effective ways of building strength. If you incorporate aerial fitness into your regular work-out programme, you'll see and feel the benefits in no time.

It looks hard. Do you have to be strong?

Aerial fitness IS hard. But give it time and you'll get there. Within a few weeks you'll develop strength and muscles you never knew you had!

When are the classes?

All our classes can be found on the bookings page. There are also details on the availability of spaces too. Please be aware that many classes will sell out in advance so it's worth booking ahead.

What is the cancellation policy?

With limited numbers to our classes, we require 48 hours notice to cancel and transfer classes. It seems harsh, but it's the only way we can effectively manage our instructors, our customers, our marketing and our equipment to make sure they're all in sync.

What should I wear?

Try to avoid loose fitting clothing. Cover your arms, you knees and your midriff. Cotton fabrics are more compatible with silks than shiny lycra. Jewellery and watches need to be taken off and long hair should be tied back to avoid getting tangled on the equipment. Aerial fitness is also generally done in bare feet as this gives you the best grip. (Thin ballet pump type shoes can also be worn)
Additionally, please try to avoid clothes with zips, like those running leggings that have little handy zips at the back. They're not handy, they're nasty! They damage our silks like nothing else and bite into your skin!

How many people are in a class?

Each class can have up to12 students, with one instructor per discipline. We always make sure there are sufficient teachers to give everyone the attention and guidance they need and that there is ample equipment to go round.

Do you have classes for different levels?

Most of our classes are suitable for people of all levels of ability. A few are specifically aimed at students with a little more experience but all class levels are clearly displayed on the booking page. Please contact us if you have any questions.

I don't really like heights...

There's no hiding from it – Aerial work does involve doing some activity in the air... but how high you go is entirely up to you. You'll have a chance to acclimatise yourself before doing anything at height. A common outcome of Aerial training is gained confidence working at height

Is there parking available?

Yes. You can park your car within Phantom's premises during the times Miles Up is open.

Remember the studio is only a short walk away from Reading railway station and buses run on Caversham Road near The Moderation. Go to our 'How to get  to Miles Up' section for more info.

Am I allowed to bring food and drink?

Classes can be very tiring, so some water or energy snacks can be a good idea. But please keep all foodstuffs well away from the training area. No-one wants to climb on sticky equipment...

Can I just come and watch?

Of course. Visitors are welcome as long as they do not disrupt the class and keep out of the way of the lesson. But if you really want to see what it's all about, we'd really recommend giving it a go for yourself!

Is there anywhere I can changed?

Phantom has got large toilets that you can use to get changed.

Is Miles Up insured?

Miles Up Ltd has all the required insurances in place. We have Public and Employers liability up to £5m. Further information is available on request. Please contact us for details.

I've got persistent injuries, is this a problem?

If you've got injuries to your back, neck, shoulders or wrists, aerial activities are probably not a good idea. If you're not sure, please contact us and we'll advise you as best as we can. Aerial activities are not suitable for people suffering from glaucoma.
